And Just When I Was Beginning To Enjoy Brussels ..

Today, a police inspector informed me that I have 5 days to leave the country. Yes, you read that right. D-E-P-O-R-T-E-D. I was handed an "Ordre de Quitter le Territoire" and was told "you must leave Belgium." Since I don't speak or read French, I have no idea what is going on.

I made a couple of frantic calls to the relocation expert handling my residency permit application and he is looking into the matter. Hopefully, it's a misplaced file or some other bureaucratic snafu. (I'd hate to think the Mayor holds a grudge!) I'll keep you posted!

In the meantime, I think I'll just go hang out at that church in St. Gilles with all the asylum seekers ...

Wow ... you win. I thought they were mean to me with their '7 months just to give me a residency permit' but this is superior stupidity on the part of those who make rules.

Clearly this was a post that I had to link to ... good luck with it all, and let me know if you end up down at the church with those other illegals, lol I'll cook for you guys.

Being from the US. I can't really comment on the "stupidity on the part of those who make rules." You know, the whole throwing rocks when you live in a glass house ...

Hopefully, I will have this resolved soon (like in the next 4 days). If not, I don't eat anything green, so please plan your menu accordingly!!!

Hey Rod,

The thought did briefly cross my mind. But, then, who am I kidding. Really, what are the chances that the Minister of Foreign Affairs is reading my blog?

Ahhh, glass houses ... I confess, i did have to post on the NZ version of those who make rules yesterday ... and so yes, I am throwing stones from inside the glass house ...

Nothing green in foodstuffs ... tis done.

I've been building towards severe and unreasonable surliness these last few days anyway ... I have to completely cancel my free flight home today due to still not being legal to work. If only they hadn't told me 6-8 weeks many many months ago.

Good luck!

If I have to cancel my upcoming flights (FOUR scheduled in the next 2 weeks), I'm going to be hurling boulders through greenhouses!

I'm sorry to hear you had to cancel a free flight home. (It can't be cheap to fly to NZ from Brussels.)

Ah, the experiences of living abroad ...

OMG! How could this happen? Did an officer just come to your house and deliver this notice?

You can't leave Belgium before I get there! ;)

I think you should be able to seek asylum. YOu can say, How can I go back to the U.S. while Dubya is still president?

You DID attend an anti-war protest with a bunch of Koreans, right?

I guess they still have their suspicions about that bomb at the Dept of Justice.
